"There are some things in this world that you rely on, like a sure bet, and when they let you down, shifting from where you've carefully placed them, it shakes your faith, right where you stand."
This is important because the whole book is about how something goes wrong for two friends, and they have to rely on each other for support. I choose this passage because I can relate to it. When something goes wrong that you weren't expecting it "shakes your faith". This means that when this thing goes wrong it makes you question everything about the past, present and future.
